Dr. Gavin is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy and has a joint appointment with the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Colorado State University. He received his B.S. in Psychology at Moorhead State University, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology at the University of Miami, Florida. Shortly after receiving his doctorate, he severed as the Director of Research at the Institute of Logopedics in Wichita, Kansas, a residential facility for educating children with a variety of disabilities. He has taught courses in statistics and research methodology as well as conducted research in the Psychology Department at the University of Miami, in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at the University of Wyoming, and in the Departments of Occupational Therapy and Communicative Disorders and Sciences at the University at Buffalo - SUNY, and in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences at the University of Colorado before coming to CSU in the fall of 2004.

Dr. Gavin’s research interests focus on a variety of topics related to child development. His early research centered primarily on speech and language development in infants and toddlers. More recently, in collaboration with Dr. Patricia Davies, he has developed a program of research on sensory processing and cognitive development in children and adolescents utilizing electroencephalography (EEG) and event-related potentials (ERPs) methodologies. Dr. Gavin serves a Director of the Brainwaves Research Laboratory where he manages day to day activities of the research projects funded by grants from the Department of Occupational Therapy and the College of Applied Human Sciences at CSU, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Wallace Research Foundation.

He has presented his research on sensory and cognitive event-related potentials at an international conference in Granada, Spain, Lisbon, Portugal and Berlin, Germany as well as across the country at national conferences such as the Society for Neuroscience, Society for Psychophysiological Research, Society for Research in Child Development, and the American Occupational Therapy Association. His research activities have led to numerous scholarly publications including six book chapters and over 34 research articles in peer-reviewed journals such as the American Journal of Occupational Therapy, the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology, Brain and Cognition, Brain Research, Child Development, Clinical Linguistics and Phonetics, Developmental Neuropsychology, International Journal of Psychophysiology, and the Journal of Speech Language and Hearing Research to name a few.
