A New Chapter for Groups and Games at STAR Institute

I’m sharing some important news with a deep sense of responsibility and gratitude. Game to Grow, an organization I have admired and collaborated with for over a decade, has made the thoughtful decision to wind down its operations this autumn. While the close of any chapter can bring sadness, this is also a moment to honor what has been achieved and to carry forward what truly matters.
Many of Game to Grow’s beloved programs — including the hospital gaming program and Critical Core training — will now find their home here at STAR Institute. I was privileged to play a role in the development of Critical Core and have witnessed firsthand the profound impact these tools have had on therapists, educators, and young people worldwide. To be entrusted with their future is an honor and a commitment I take to heart.
Our goal is simple: to safeguard these programs, nurture them, and ensure they continue to grow in reach and impact. At STAR, we will not only preserve their quality and spirit but also explore how they can further enrich the lives of the neurodistinct communities we serve.
The work Game to Grow has accomplished is extraordinary:
-
Reaching hundreds of youths directly through Social Flourishing programs and hundreds more through hospital gaming.
-
Launching Critical Core, now in the hands of over 7,000 practitioners and families across the globe.
-
Training thousands of professionals across six continents to harness the power of games for connection, skill-building, and joy.
This is not an ending. It is the passing of a torch — and we are committed to carrying that light forward. The quests will continue here at STAR, with the same heart, innovation, and dedication you have come to know.
I warmly invite you to stay connected with us as this new chapter begins. Sign up for STAR Institute’s newsletter to hear about upcoming trainings, hospital gaming updates, and opportunities to be part of this evolving story.
Together, we can ensure these remarkable programs continue to flourish for years to come.
With gratitude and determination,
Dr. Virginia Spielmann
Executive Director, STAR Institute
